The Many Shades of a Marwari/Sindhi Wedding: Decoding and Revealing

Introduction

Sindhi weddings are often expensive affairs with a lot of glitz and glamour. Sindhi wedding rituals and traditions are filled with joy and mirth. Sindhi weddings always have fun elements, but customs are just as important as having a good time. Sindhis are Sanatani Hindus, and Sindhi marriages combine Sufism and Hinduism.

What is Marwari/Sindhi wedding?

The Vedic rituals are followed, and the marriages typically occur on days that are considered auspicious by everyone, such as Satyanarayan Chandsi or the new moon day. There are many wedding planners in Jaipur who will help you to turn your big day into the most important day of your life. Sindhi weddings are a must-attend event thanks to the mouthwatering cuisine, the joyful atmosphere, the extravagant displays of riches, and the observance of long-standing traditions. To learn more about the ceremony, keep reading.

Pre-wedding rituals of Sindhi weddings

  1. Kachhi Misri– The Kachhi Misri ceremony is the two families’ official first meeting after the horoscopes have been matched, the pictures and bio-data have been exchanged, and the match is finalised.  An informal engagement ceremony is performed between the bride and the groom in front of the bride’s and the groom’s families. The families exchange gifts such as clothing, confections, fruits, etc. The pair trades coconuts and misri lumps (sugar crystals).
  2. Pakki Misri- This is the phrase used to describe the formal engagement ceremony that takes place between the two families and usually occurs a week before the wedding day. The bridegroom’s family arrives with gifts like sweets, fruits, luxury clothing like sarees or lehengas, and jewellery. The sister and sister-in-law of the groom place these gifts on the bride’s lap. The mother of the bride-to-be receives a misri-filled earthen pot from the mother of the groom, which she must open in front of everyone. Drawing a picture of Lord Ganesha on this pot with the bride’s mother and seven other married women marks the beginning of the wedding rituals.
  3. Berana Satsang- During the Berana Satsang, which is a congregational prayer, the whole family gathers and sings a prayer to the almighty Jhulelal to bless the couple.
  4. Dev Bithana– The bride’s and the groom’s homes host this ceremony. The priest places a stone grinder in the house as the deity or Gundro.
  5. Lada– Just like the Punjabi Sangeet ceremony, in this Sindhi wedding ritual, women from the family and the neighbourhood assemble to sing folk wedding songs known as Lada. This ceremony is customarily hosted by the bride’s family.
  6. Tih- The bride’s side priest makes a visit to the groom’s home while carrying a bag of rice, sugar, cloves, cardamom, a coconut, sweets (21 in number), dates (9 in number), and a ball of green silk yarn. Along with these things, he also has a piece of paper with him that has the wedding Lagna or another auspicious period written on it.
  7. Mehendi– The bride’s family gathers around the traditional Indian bride the day before the wedding and decorates her hands and feet with henna paste in exquisitely artistic designs. The groom’s initials are included in the Mehendi patterns.

There are quite a few other Sindhi wedding rituals like Wanwas, Jenya, Saagri, Ghari Puja, Navgrahi Puja, Kheeram Sat, and Peear Vaari which happen before the actual wedding.

Wedding rituals of Sindhi weddings

  1. Haldi– On the morning of the wedding, the bride and groom are both covered with turmeric paste. Married women in the family apply oil to their hair.
  2. Jaimala– After the baraat is welcomed, the bride and the groom face each other and exchange garlands with each other three times.
  3. Kanyadaan– The father of the bride officially hands over his daughter to the groom, asking him to look after her for the rest of their lives. He covers the couple’s linked hands with holy water to symbolize the giving over.
  4. Phera– The priest officiates the wedding in front of a sacred fire, which in Vedic tradition is considered to be the most significant witness to a marriage. The priest offers offerings (ghee, flowers and other havan ingredients) to the fire while reciting Vedic mantras. Then he commands the couple to rise up and make four rounds of the fire. In some communities, the ritual includes seven pheras.

Garo Dhago, Baraat, Swagat, Paon Dhulai, Palli-Pallo, Hathialo, Saptapadi, and Blessings from the elders are other rituals during the wedding ceremony.

Post-wedding rituals of Sindhi weddings

  1. Vidaai– This is the ceremony where the bride leaves her parents’ house amidst a heartfelt farewell. The bride carries all the gifts which she received from her paternal home, and during the wedding ceremony and the couple departs for the groom’s home.

These are the rituals which happen at the groom’s house- Datar, Salt Shagun, Chhanar, Sataurah, Gadjani.

Sindhi weddings: Things to expect

  1. Baraat coming late– It is not surprising that most baraats never arrive at the allocated hour given the Sindhis’ legendary endurance and love of dancing. But the excitement and delight they bring with them make the wait worthwhile.
  2. Non-stop dancing– Without upbeat music and nonstop dancing while everyone lets loose, no Sindhi wedding is complete! Every event, whether it be the wedding, sangeet, or mehendi, starts and finishes with a contagious spirit. Often alcohol is served in Sindhi weddings these days.
  3. Amazing food– The Sindhis and Marwaris have long been known for their love of eating, and every celebration is an envious array of food and culinary spectacular. However, most of these communities serve vegetarian food, though things are changing with times. Multiple types of sweets and namkeens will be available in the food counters of Sindhi-Marwari weddings.
